Body image
May 15, 2019
Do you ever wish you could change that certain thing or things about your body? If so your certainly aren't alone. Loads of people feel unhappy with some way about their looks. When you get stuck on the things you don't like about yourself it can bring your self esteem down.
You certainly don't need a perfect body to have good body image. When you like your body as it is you boost your body image and in turn that boosts your self-esteem too. What couldn't be more positive?
I cant remember a time when I have actually liked my body or to show it off. Even abroad I still want to hide my body when it is 30 odd degrees. But I'm working on it and so can you. I have made a list of things that are helping me at the moment with my poor body image which I have struggled with since I was 12.
What is body image?
Body image is a person's own percetion of the aesthetics of their own body. It involves hugely around how the person sees and thinks about themselves compared to the 'standards' that have been set by society. Society plays a great value on beauty of the human body (especially in the 21st centuray), though body image is a persons perception of their own body and at times it doesn't reflect society's standards but it's how we think others perceive us.
Positive self talk
Every day when I get ready and start to hear the niggling thoughts about my body and how 'ugly', 'fat', 'disgusting' and 'horrible' it is, I try and challenge them.
I look in the mirror and force myself to find something I like about myself and then I say it to my reflection.
It doesn't need to be physical things about your body you like; it could be as simple as you like the way your hair is sitting or you like the outfit your wearing or the colour of your eyes. When you challenge your inner critic about the way you look/feel about yourself it can help you feel a tad more confident, it is also a fab way to practice self love.
Self love talk
Self love is something that can be so hard to do. Us as humans like to pick up on any flaw and imperfection we see. Though, as humans we need to be able to talk kindly about ourselves as we only live with ourselves. We only have ourselves to fall back on at all times. So we need to find small things to love ourselves. If the niggling thoughts come back, use the positive self talk we did in the morning and repeat what you have said to yourself again and again. You are much more than your inner critic.
Yes, there are days when I can't find a single positive thing to say about myself. I just have to accept that those are just a bad mental health day and that I need to have a self care based day: pamper myself, read positive quotes, spend a little money on things I like and treat myself.
Being kind to yourself is important as there is so many others in this world that can be unkind to you that you don't deserve to beat yourself up nor talk badly of yourself. If you aren't kind to yourself who will be? As I said previously we can only rely/ fall back on ourselves at the end of the day.
